Oludeniz is one of the touristic neighborhoods of Fethiye district of Mugla province. Oludeniz, which turned into a town in 1992, took the title of neighborhood in 2012 with the law accepted by the Turkish Grand National Assembly. Fethiye Oludeniz is one of the highly developed holiday destinations in terms of tourism. The most famous beach of the region is known as Oludeniz Beach. As a matter of fact, Oludeniz Beach was chosen as the most beautiful beach in the world with 82 percent of the votes in 2006. The region located on the Teke Peninsula is an example of abalone (lagoon) formations in Turkey.

Oludeniz, as the name suggests, is famous for its sea water, which is almost a stagnant lake. Even on the most stormy days, while the shores of Belcekiz are struggling with waves, there is only flutter in Oludeniz. However, Oludeniz, which seems stagnant, actually has the feature of renewing itself almost every day. This situation can be explained by three reasons:

    • The spring water outlets, which are densely located in Oludeniz, create a current from the bottom of the sea towards the open sea.
    • Due to the salt difference created by the spring waters, there is a continuous circulation in and out of the open sea.
    • As a result of the tidal effect, the sea water rises and falls about half a meter every two or three days. This provides a large amount of sea water inlet and outlet.
